This Rameswaram Temple is situated in the south india tamilnadu
This  island of Rameswaram have acquired this name because, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva, the God of Gods here on return from Sri Lanka.  after killing king Ravana Lord Rama returned with his consort Goddess Sita to India first stepping on the shores of Rameswaram. To expiate the "dosha" of killing a brahmin, Lord Rama wanted to offer worship to Lord Shiva. Since there was no shrine in the island had ask  Sri Hauman to go Kailash to bring an idol of Lord Shiva.


  As hanuman has not came at the time of pooja goddess sita build a small shiva lingam with sand in the sea shore that lingam is named as Ramanathar after completing the pooga hanuman came with shiva lingam and lord rama placed that lingam near and named as viswanathar till now poojas are made to this lingam as like ramanathar .There is 12 jyothir lingam in that one is here in rameswaram.





There are 64 tirthas ( holy water ) around this island in that 24 tirthas are important in that 22 tirthas are with in the temple and agni theertham the primary sea shore associated with temple this 22 tirthas indicates the 22 arrows on Ramas quiver.
